We are probably introducing to you, products that you have never seen or heard of before. We can say this with confidence because the market technologies of today are allowing us to reach hundreds of new markets that have not yet been introduced these products. They are revolutionary and proven concrete treatment products that have amazing advantages!

Anyone who has concrete floors, concrete block walls, concrete pipes, or any other surface made of Portland cement has problems. These problems may be water damage, mold and algae growth, salts, urine and fecal matter (animals), acid, juices, oil, sulfates or nitrates, etc. They may be problems of dusting, bacterial or algae formation, soft concrete, saponification which causes vinyl tiles, paint, polyurethane, and epoxy coatings to peel, or to cause concrete disintegration (efflorescence), spalling, de-lamination or softening.

Today, if you have someone seal your concrete surface, they will give it a "surface seal" with some kind of epoxy, tar coating, polyurethane, cementations topping or paint. This type of sealing is effective for anywhere from six weeks to maybe three years. Then it has to be reapplied again, exposing other problems.

EOS Systems attack the problems from an entirely different approach; they don't just temporarily cover up the problems like a band-aid fix, they provide long-lasting sealing solutions.  EOS Systems will permanently convert causes to advantages.  They are used to seal, strengthen, and condition all concrete structures. The actions of EOS Systems take place down inside the concrete; rather than a slight change of color (whitening), there is no visible sign of a change on the surface.

EOS Systems are colorless or milky white penetrating products which waterproof and preserve by causing chemical reactions in masonry that solidify all the component parts into one solid mass. They are not a surface coating and will in no way change the physical aspects of the present structure except some may leave a semi gloss finish.  Performance occurs within the pores of the masonry.

EOS Systems may be applied to stucco, concrete, brick, cement block, terrazzo, wood, walls or floors, inside or outside, wet or dry, new or old, and unpainted.

Why? * How does it work? * Is it safe to use? * Is it hazardous? * Can I apply it myself?

All these questions will be answered for you as you read the text.  EOS Systems were formulated for use in the world of concrete.  They are a one time treatment process for all concrete types. The data contained in this booklet should give you a reasonable understanding of our product line.

History

The history of "Aero-Silica" goes back to the early 1900's and has been used successfully for many  years by architects, designers, engineers, contractors and project owners. In the mid seventies with the availability of newly refined chemicals, Endur-O-Seal (EOS) was re-formulated for enhanced penetration and a deeper penetrating seal. With today's shrinking world, expanding construction growth, modern communications and marketing technologies, this product is being made available to the world market demands. Over the many years of use, this product has been used in major dam projects, thousands of schools, commercial and industrial facilities, state, county, city agencies and by untold numbers of residential users to resolve and avoid all types of cementations problems.

About The Product

EOS Systems are water-borne sealants made specifically for concrete in order to solve the damaging problems caused by water, acid, oil, reactive aggregates, blood, fat, or problems resulting from dusting, algae formation, soft concrete, saponification, or simple efflorescence.

EOS Systems are used to seal concrete flooring, walls, blocks, pipes, or other concrete substances. Where top coatings only protect the top surfaces of concrete, EOS Systems solves the problems of concrete from the inside out. All the action by EOS Systems takes place down inside the concrete slab or structure, instead of just on the surface.

How do EOS Systems work?  When EOS Systems are sprayed (with an ordinary garden type sprayer) on the surface and spread with a fiber brush, to avoid puddling, it penetrates the concrete. When it comes in contact with the alkali inside the concrete, within about eight seconds it forms a cold permanent compound in the form of a gel. This gel expands inside the pores sealing the pores and hairline cracks, emulsifying most foreign matter, and purges it to the surface to be washed away. This makes EOS Systems effective immediately. The gel will continue to purge foreign matter to the surface until it has been removed from inside the concrete. The gel will turn the surface flint hard in about 90 days, filling pores and hairline cracks, thus turning the concrete into a solid mass that resists the penetration of destructive pollutants.

Performance Features

1. Ordinarily, EOS Systems are applied in two or three separate and successive applications, from 1 to 24 hours apart, according to how fast the concrete will absorb the product.

2. You can walk on the concrete surface immediately after the EOS Systems have been is applied because all of the action is below the surface of the concrete.

3. The concrete does not have to be dry for EOS Systems to effectively penetrate and perform satisfactorily; in fact, some require the surface to be damp.

4. EOS Systems reacts with the alkali within eight seconds, becoming effective immediately.

5. Purging can continue for a few hours up to 10 days according to the amount and type of pollutants inside the concrete.

6. Set time between applications can vary from 15-20 minutes to 45 minutes according to the age and porosity of the concrete.

7. Spread rate: Ordinarily, one gallon will treat 300 square feet with one application. Three applications will cover 50 to 150 square feet.

8. It reduces dusting, stains, efflorescence, and saponification.

9. Re-conditions and strengthens old deteriorated concrete and adds several years of useful life, saving costly replacement.

10. It strengthens, tightens, and seals deteriorating mortar between bricks and

concrete blocks.

11. It helps to form a better, long- lasting bond between old and new concrete and any type of topical floor coating.

WHY ENDUR-O-SEAL?

All foreign matter is cancerous to concrete and masonry. Foreign matter is water, acids, alkali, oil or certain minerals absorbed or spilled on the masonry: such as lactic acid in milk, alkali, chemicals, etc. These cancerous substances embed themselves in masonry creating rutting, pitting, crumbling, cracking, and dusting.

EOS Systems applied to masonry, concrete, plaster, and stucco will react as follows. The reaction of

EOS Systems with the alkali found in masonry is an expansive gel compound. This expansive gel is chemically forced into the pores and by capillary attraction is absorbed into the voids that exist within all concrete. This process repeats itself until the masonry is entirely sealed. This reaction also purges most foreign matter to the surface, where it can be removed, thereby removing the cancerous particles from the masonry. This process will stop hairline cracking, crumbling, and pitting and also increase the density of the masonry. This will permanently waterproof and condition your concrete.

General Discussion on Concrete

Concrete is an expensive asset that we must protect, maintain, and preserve to reap its cost effective and lasting benefits. Concrete is a man-made construction product made by combining cement (containing lime), sand, gravel and water. As these components begin to cure, the water is expelled during dehydration leaving what we call pores in the concrete. Thus, it is comparatively a porous mass held together by the embedded steel. These pores then set the stage for water and many other pollutants to penetrate into the concrete destroying the concrete and corroding the steel. If the liquid pollutant freezes, the expansion will split the mass or spall the surface, weakening and/or destroying the structure.

The pores set up a strong capillary action which wicks water and minerals out of the ground (up to 20 feet). As the water passes through the concrete, it picks up the free lime and alkali in the concrete that was left over from the concrete curing process. The alkali reacts with any surface sealant such as polyurethane, epoxy, oil based paint, and adhesives and causes "saponification". This then causes the surface sealant to separate, leaving the concrete exposed to the decaying effects of

We borrowed the word alkali from the Arabs to whom it meant, "the ashes of the Saltwort plant". Alkali is never pure and rarely stable. It is made up of a combination of elements, and almost always reacting with other elements. To break down the elements into chemical terms, we refer to the periodic chart of elements. We start with hydrogen; then lithium, sodium, potassium, rubidium, and cesium; with a part of francium. Francium is a radioactive element with a half-life of only 20 minutes. The other five are very active alkali metals. Each element has electrons and molecules which are always eager to take part in chemical reactions with other elements. The two most important alkali metals are sodium and potassium. We find a hint of them in potassium carbonate and sodium carbonate. Sodium makes up 2.6% of the earth's crust and potassium makes up 2.5%, yet we never see them because they are always found in combination with other elements.

The increased use of concrete sub-floors in direct contact with the ground makes it more important than ever to understand the moisture and alkali content in these sub-floors. The effect on the surface sealers (paints) and floor coverings are problems that we have faced for many years in the construction world. Well known as the "Alkali Problem", this condition is primarily a problem of moisture. Alkali is present in every concrete slab and is more detrimental with moisture. On adequately ventilated suspended concrete sub-floors, moisture is not present in troublesome quantities. Where the slab is in direct contact with the ground or a poorly ventilated airspace, moisture is brought up through the slab by capillary action. It dissolves the alkali salts in the concrete and appears at the surface as a destructive solution.

The most serious difficulty caused by alkaline solutions is the chemical reaction, "saponification".  This is essentially the same reaction that takes place when certain oils or fatty acids are mixed with alkali, as with the manufacturing of soap. Although moisture and alkali conditions may vary greatly, there is always sufficient moisture in the ground and alkali in concrete to present an "Alkali Problem" on the sub-floors that are affected by the ground moisture. It is never safe to assume that a concrete slab will always be dry because it has been dry for several years. In many cases a concrete floor will seem to be dry because the moisture content is very small and evaporates into the air as soon as it reaches the surface. When a floor coating is applied, evaporation is prevented or retarded and the alkaline solution collects under the coating or floor covering and starts destroying the coating.

Porosity

Webster's New World Dictionary defines porosity as, "Being full of pores, or tiny holes, through which fluids, air, or light may pass."

Normally, concrete is a mixture of four basic ingredients: sand, gravel, cement, and water. In the mixing process, as certain amount of air is mixed into the concrete. The water and air take up space inside the concrete even after the concrete is poured in place and during the early stage of setting.

When the concrete is "worked" in place and begins to polymerize, the heavier ingredients have a tendency to settle to the bottom and the lighter ingredients have a tendency to float to the top.  Water being the lightest of the four basic ingredients, floats to the top and is evaporated away, or is squeezed out the sides or bottom. As the water is squeezed out, it moves in all directions. Water, being a solid in that it takes up space, leaves millions of small rivulets and pores crisscrossed in all directions.

These small rivulets or hollow spaces tie together creating what we call pores or capillaries. Quite often the pores create hairline cracks inside the concrete, weakening the concrete. When the capillary action draws water up into the concrete, or rain hits the side of a concrete wall, or water hydrology bears against a concrete basement wall, the water travels via these pores through the concrete.

The pores are interwoven and interconnected, thus allowing a slow seepage of water through the concrete. The denser the concrete, the tighter the pores, and less water is allowed to pass through.

A pad of concrete may resist 80-90% of the water trying to soak through. For this reason, a concrete sealant need not resist 100% absorption of water through the concrete. If the sealant can resist only the percentage which the concrete itself can't resist, then the sealant has effectively sealed the concrete pad or wall.

With respect to wall sweating, it should be remembered that the surfaces of most common masonry building materials have an affinity for water molecules. The water molecular film is proportionate to the relative humidity. At the saturation point all voids, pores, and capillaries become completely filled.  When the atmospheric condition, inside or outside, which caused the excess of moisture in the first place, is not alleviated, the porous wall may be filled to saturation point with moisture in liquid form. This condition then provides an excellent opportunity for vapor travel within a wall. The vapor may strike a cold area or dew point, and condense in sufficient quantities to reach the interior wall surface and appear as wall sweat or bleeding. Each of the above, if allowed to go unchecked, can be responsible for heavy maintenance costs by causing peeling paint, spalling, formation of mildew, and efflorescence.  All porous masonry wall materials do the same thing, unless proper steps are taken to avoid it.

Plasticizer Migration in the Flooring Trade

One of the major problems facing the floor covering industry is plasticizer migration. That is, the movement of substance from one product into another product, so as to create product deterioration. This product deterioration can take on many forms such as: softening, cracking, blistering, peeling,  de-lamination, loss of strength, etc.

Today, many floor coverings are laid on a concrete base. The owner has 2 options. First, lay the floor covering on the bare concrete. Or second, seal the concrete before laying the floor covering. Let's examine these 2 options.

First.  If the floor covering is laid on bare concrete, there may be a migration of the alkali, other salts or any foreign material down inside the concrete, such as oil, which may attack the adhesive (if used) or the floor coverings directly. These salts will be brought to the surface in a water solution through either capillary action or subsurface water pressure below. Also, any oils, acids, or other such foreign materials down inside the concrete, will migrate to the surface where it will attack the adhesive or the floor covering directly. Subsurface oils may take months to show up at the surface, to attack or discolor the floor covering.

Second.  If the concrete is sealed, another set of detrimental factors will start to emerge. The concrete sealants used today are cementations membranes, polyurethane, epoxies, or oil-based paints. These concrete sealants have 2 things in common. They are surface sealants, and are retro-chemical based. There is a good possibility of a plasticizer migration directly from these surface sealants to the adhesive or floor covering. Also, the alkali or pollutants in the concrete will cause saponification, eventual disintegration or release from the concrete surface which brings on long range problems and excessive costs.

Up until the present time, the above conditions have been the state of technology throughout the floor covering industry. Now the applicator has a third option, a solution to the problem, EOS Products, a highly effective penetrating internal sealer.
